American House: An essay of stone love

Award winning Chicago area home features layer upon layer of luxury, style, and function.

"Each room is like an essay of stone love, celebrating color and texture."

A country home in the western Chicago suburbs of Hinsdale, IL is a study in classical opulence, innovative modern engineering, and impeccable craftsmanship, earning it a 2020 Tucker Design Award from the Natural Stone Institute and four 2020 Acanthus Awards from the Institute for Classical Architecture and Art. The private residence was designed to be a comfortable gathering place for multiple generations of the client's family. According to Architect Michael Graham "Its interiors are rather eclectic, and based on early 20th century Anglo-American precedents. The quality of the stone work throughout the home is reminiscent of 16th century Roman traditions."

Fieldstone paired with cut sandstone dominates the exterior, cut sandstone and marble form many interior walls, whimsical hand carved details are sprinkled throughout, a cut stone loggia overlooks the wooded backyard – and then there’s the stone floors.

Custom floors delight and inspire

Dramatic stone floors make bold statements while unifying luxurious colors and textural elements to create truly unforgettable experiences in every room. According to Tucker Design Award judges “Each room is like an essay of stone love, celebrating color and texture. [The home] harkens back to 1920’s opulence.”

Stone floor design in the entry foyer offer a luxurious and warm welcome.

The homeowners and design team envisioned flooring in the entry way that was grand enough to co-exist with gilt trim, leather covered walls, and upholstery featuring a spirited emerald velvet zebra print. The resulting floor, engineered and fabricated by Creative Edge, features a metaphorical map of the world in Cenia limestone and Carrara marble which balances the grandeur with warmth and comfort.

Custom floors throughout the home, fabricated by Creative Edge, lend to the completely unique aesthetic that is vaguely inspired by Georgian architecture viewed through an Anglo-American lens. Custom rugs trimmed with a marble and brass-inlay motif grace hallways. One of the home’s bathrooms (pictured above) features a striking wall-to-wall floor medallion in natural marble with metal inlay. The Creative Edge-crafted floor is the centerpiece of the round bathroom that is covered floor-to-ceiling in book-matched stone that was hand-selected and shipped from Carrara, Italy.

"We value our close collaboration with Creative Edge. They are as passionate about stone craftsmanship as we are, and they allow us the control we need to achieve very special outcomes" – Michael Graham, Architect

Meticulous stone craftsmanship required

To achieve their vision, Project Architect, Suzanne Winters worked with the Creative Edge team to precision-engineer the floors for beauty and function. Suzanne carefully chose the perfect grain pattern from each slab before Creative Edge cut the slabs using waterjet technology. "We value our close collaboration with Creative Edge. They are as passionate about stone craftsmanship as we are, and they allow us the control we need to achieve very special outcomes" Graham noted. The finished home is a masterpiece that is engineered for function and comfort. Graham reported high praise from the homeowner that describes his family's experience in the home. "Our home lives even more fantastically than it looks" –which is hard to imagine given the spectacular beauty of the finished home.
